Music instruction is open to all students at Grandview. Lower School students receive general music instruction two class periods per week and participate in at least two yearly musical productions. Middle and Upper School students may elect to take music classes as a part of their regular school day.
The Lower School Music Program provides students with a broad range of musical experiences in all styles with an emphasis on basic musical skill building. Encouraging the development of the singing voice is key as students learn the basic building blocks of note and rhythm reading, the development of good tone and choral technique, and have first experiences with musical instruments including percussion, recorder, Orff instruments and keyboards. Students also participate in public performances. Every student from our Lower School is also invited to participate in our after school chorus, Glee Club.
Glee Club is Grandview's award-winning after-school chorus for Lower and Middle School students. The group performs music of all styles ranging from traditional choral, classical and holiday music to contemporary pop, rock, and jazz. Each year, the Glee Club travels to perform on a Spring Tour which includes either public performances or adjudicated festivals.
Middle School Chorale/Musical Theater
This Middle School class combines traditional choral singing with musical theater to form the Grandview Middle School Corale. Music theory and sight-singing are also a focus of this class. Music studied includes traditional and contemporary choral music as well as solo and ensemble music from the American Musical Theater Songbook. The class emphasizes the various characteristics of vocal development for all of the different styles of music studied.
The Grandview Music Department, in conjunction with the Grandview Dance Academy, produces a full-scale Broadway-style musical each year. Middle and upper school students have an opportunity to participate as performers, technicians, or stage managers. The production is designed with sets, costumes, lighting, and live music, providing an unforgettable experience for the students.
Acapride is Grandview's a cappella ensemble for upper school students who enjoy singing and performing. The group is performance-oriented and forms the basis for the students who participate in the Spring Musical. In addition to preparing for performances, participants also work on basic musicianship skills such as sight singing and knowledge of basic music theory. Acapride performs contemporary pop, rock, and jazz pieces.
Private Music Instruction
The Grandview Private Arts Instruction Program is designed for students who want to excel in instrumental music and voice by studying one-on-one with a private instructor. Although private lessons are available after school, in some cases, Grandview provides a very unique opportunity to be able to take private lessons during the school day.
