Grandview is currently a Top 5 finalist in Palm Beach County for:

Outstanding Academic Program

This honor will be awarded to a single program at a Palm Beach County academic institution. Award criteria include learning outcomes, impact on students and the community, and level of innovation.

The Innovation Program (IP) at Grandview Preparatory School in Boca Raton offers a personalized learning experience which helps Middle and Upper School students discover design thinking, passion-based research and develop hands on skills. In the 2018-19 school year alone, students harnessed the power of the sun and published their first book. Grandview truly believes that learning and its outcomes are more meaningful to students when teachers engage their passions and unleash their creativity.

When it comes to Middle School boys, tacos can be a real motivator. At the regional Boca Raton Energy Whiz Expo, students in grades 4-12 were challenged to design and build solar cookers and create an original food dish. Grandview’s IP team cooked up Chef Sol Steak Tacos in a special renewable, clean energy cooker and served them in 3-D printed “taco pockets” to the judges. They won 1st Place All Around.

One of Grandview’s most successful IP projects, Equal and Empowered, is an organization founded 3 years ago and funded by Palm Beach Philanthropy Tank. E+E is committed to promoting equality for all and creating positive change. Several students and alumni published their first book on that topic and celebrated with an on-campus book signing. “Equal + Empowered” is currently for sale on BarnesandNoble.com and Amazon.com.

Though the Innovation Program at Grandview is constantly evolving, we’ve found that quality colleges are likely to favor students involved because they are displaying an ownership over their education. Grandview remains committed to expanding opportunities in experiential learning for students.

Award for Institutional Excellence

This award will be presented to a Palm Beach County institution that has demonstrated exemplary achievements in academic excellence and student success, has championed diversity and inclusion, and has effectively engaged in community outreach and partnerships.

Grandview Preparatory School, located in Boca Raton, Florida, takes its mission of personalized learning to the next level with programs built around the interests and talents of its students (PK3-Grade 12). As a small yet diverse group of learners, Grandview seeks to develop individual and collective potential by keeping matters of the heart as prioritized as matters of the mind.

The curricular design at Grandview, based on inquiry and innovation, recognizes that students must participate actively, not only with information and materials but also with the ‘why we care’ aspect of educational challenges. Brain research shows that deep learning experiences become a part of a student’s identity when they have both voice and choice in the process.

The Grandview learning formula starts with foundational skills, adding increased student agency as students grow into themselves. Through design challenges and arts integration to build empathy, meta-cognition exercises to encourage ‘thinking about thinking’, and collaborative projects that require social and academic accountability, Grandview students develop a growth mindset about learning and an awareness of the equal importance of all voices at the table.

Recent student successes include the 2018 Florida Wildlife Youth Educator of the Year Award, the Google Education and the Center for Policing Equity 2018 Young Justice Nerds Award (Washington, DC), Palm Beach Philanthropy Tank finalists’ published book in 2019 “Equal & Empowered”, acceptance in Florida Atlantic University’s Barb Schmidt Fellowship for social change, and state-level recognition at 2019’s Energy Whiz Expo.
