Agile Drives Engagement at Grandview
Scrum Alliance® is pleased to announce its first official case study on Agile in classrooms, conducted in partnership with Grandview Preparatory School in Boca Raton, Florida. Scrum Alliance is the largest professional membership organization and certifying body in the Agile community dedicated to helping organizations transform while helping tomorrow’s workers prepare for careers in Agile companies
“We are excited and proud to have supported Agile training and coaching in independent schools across the country over the past four years,” said Lisa Hershman, interim CEO for Scrum Alliance. “Grandview Preparatory School is a shining example of what Agile can do for teachers and students in classrooms across the country and around the world. We see real change happening in these schools, and now we are able to show that impact with measurements and case studies like this one.”
“Grandview is a school dedicated to teaching our students 21st-century skills, such as collaboration, communication, critical thinking, and empathy,” said Jacqueline Westerfield, Head of School and an English teacher at Grandview Prep. “Encouraging our students to take more control of their learning is one way to help them master these skills.”
Grandview was committed to increasing student engagement, but the faculty initially lacked practical steps to achieve that goal. During a survey of 138 upper school students working on group projects in the fall of 2016, they learned that their concern about low student engagement was valid. So they brought in an Agile coach and trainer to help students and teachers turn things around. Over the course of the next several months, they saw that 15 out of 16 teachers had implemented Agile principles and practices into their classroom work. And the student comments about engagement were shockingly positive. More than just raising engagement, the results showed that many students not only worked better together in teams but also showed real passion for the work they were doing.
Hershman said, “We know Agile in classrooms works. We see the excitement the kids have for it and how empowered they feel when they implement frameworks such as Scrum. We will continue to track case studies like Grandview's to measure the results on both performance and the overall learning experience.”
Scrum Alliance hopes that by sharing data and stories of Agile success in classrooms, it will encourage educators to begin to transform learning in their schools, eventually helping to spread Agile to thousands of classrooms across the United States and the world and further shifting schools from rote learning toward measurable student and teacher engagement.
