Boca Raton Grandview Preparatory School Students Place

First All Around at Regional EnergyWhiz Expo Competition

State Competition to be held in Cocoa, FL on May 4, 2019

Boca Raton, FL (February 19, 2019) – Grandview Preparatory School is officially in the taco business! Students Charles B., Brendan D., Justice A., Jonah D. and TJ P. competed together at Boca Raton’s regional EnergyWhiz Expo last weekend and won 1st Place All Around at the event's Solar Energy Cook-off in the Middle School division.

The Solar Energy Cook-off is a solar cooker competition for grades 4-12 where students in teams of 2-6, design and build solar cookers and create an original dish of food. Grandview cooked up Chef Sol Steak Tacos in a special renewable and clean energy cooker and served them in 3-D printed “taco pockets” to the judges. Students were required to present and discuss their cooker’s innovative, eco-friendly design as well as any challenges they faced along the way.

EnergyWhiz Expos are regional events of various size and scope focusing on clean energy and creative kids. Held in Boca Raton, Tallahassee and Brandon, FL in 2019, hundreds of students will converge at the Florida Solar Energy Center in Cocoa, Florida to participate in a statewide EnergyWhiz Expo on May 4th.

The Solar Energy Cook-off at the Expo challenges students to use scientific know-how, creative thinking, teamwork and experimentation to design and build solar cookers. It provides an opportunity to combine the teaching of many scientific and social principles in an atmosphere of fun and excitement.

In addition to their 1st Place All Around award, Grandview Middle School students won 2nd Place for oven design and 1st Place for culinary skills. As a result, their fee to attend the EnergyWhiz State Competition has been waived. Congratulations!
