Grandview Student Athlete Rallies Classmates to Ace Childhood Cancer

Game, Set, Cure to benefit St. Jude Children's Research Hospital

Boca Raton, FL (May 14, 2021) -- When Grandview sophomore Annie Sallick's older brother Sam was diagnosed with a rare form of childhood bone cancer in 2019, her heart dropped.

“He lost his hair and became weak from chemotherapy, surgery and radiation,” Sallick said. “The boy I once used to see at school every day and running around on the baseball field was suddenly spending inordinate amounts of time in the hospital and looked sicker and sicker as the year of treatment took its toll.”

After two years of treatment, Sam is now a freshman at the University of Denver and getting back into baseball, which he had to put on the sidelines during his treatment.

Although Sam was not a patient at St. Jude’s, Sallick approached Evert’s administration about holding a tennis tournament to benefit the organization, which never charges its patients and their families for the treatment and support provided during their stay.

Each Evert student athlete is assigned to one of eight teams, each representing a child at St. Jude. Sallick is captain of Team Faith. Faith battled the same form of childhood cancer as Sam -- Ewing Sarcoma.

Each player’s $30 registration fee will go directly to St. Jude. Players are encouraged to raise additional funds for the not-for-profit organization. The team raising the most money will earn a prize along with the winners of the tennis tournament, which will take place at Evert Tennis Academy on Wed., May 19th.

Those who wish to support the efforts of these students to cure childhood cancer, can donate through Game, Set, Cure at
