Attention
Upper School students and parents:
For
the 2006-2007 school year, the laptop requirements for the students
in Grades 9-12 are listed below. The most important requirement
is the operating system. Please take note that Microsoft Windows
XP Home Edition will not work in our (or any other) domain. Contrary
to what the students may tell you or what you may hear from the
employees of your favorite local technology store, the only version
of Windows XP that will work on a domain is Windows XP Professional.
User authentication is required, and students with the home edition
will not be able to authenticate since they won’t be able
to join the domain.
If
the student already owns a laptop with Windows XP Home installed,
you must purchase Windows XP Professional and have it installed
separately. If a laptop purchase has not yet been made, be aware
that the vast majority of store-available laptops come preconfigured
with Windows XP Home. If you are unsure about which version is on
the machine, the store’s salesperson should be able to inform
you.
Our
network operates under a wireless network, so you must purchase
a wireless network card. While the 3Com card is still favored, any
brand (or integrated) wireless network card should work under our
wireless network. The only wireless network card specification we
have is that the card operates under either the 802.11 a, b, or
g standard. These types of cards are readily available at most major
technology stores.
