Dance Academy

Grandview embraces the arts as a vehicle for expression, joy, and higher order thinking. The Dance Academy offerings are integrated into the academic curricular program to enhance student understanding. Program design centers on movement, technique mastery, physical development, collaboration and meaning-making. All students have the opportunity to participate in dance, regardless of ability; however, there are higher-level opportunities for students who excel in this area.

All Early Childhood through 3rd grade students participate in a weekly dance class. Though the focus of each class varies with age, elementary dance students are exposed to different techniques, forms, and styles of dance, including jazz, modern, creative movement, ballet, African, partnering, and musical theatre. Yoga is also an important component, with students learning stretches that promote strength, coordination, flexibility, and balance; and breathing techniques that help children to focus while promoting self-control. Yoga builds self-esteem, self-confidence, and increases overall body awareness. All students perform in the annual Dance Concert.

Honor Society

Grandview petitioned the National Junior Honor Society for Dance Arts and the National Honor Society for Dance Arts for the privilege of chartering two Honor Society Chapters. The Grandview Dance Academy has been determined to meet the standards required by the governing board of the Honor Society, and the chapters were founded in 2011. Membership in this national organization is not only a reward for the fine work of the program, but further evidence of the chapter’s desire to continue to inspire others through dance. Candidates are deemed eligible for induction based upon their dedication to dance, academic achievement, and service to others.
